Expand On Your Skills

Journal Entry: Thu Nov 19, 2009, 11:21 AM
Today my horoscope said I should expand on my skills. I find that ironic since I've been having a hard time finding gigs because my areas of expertise don't match what's out there.

Sure, I can give you a whole host of articles or an A+ on your term paper. But there are some disciplines of writing that I could use to work on...like grant writing.

I was sifting through the job ads yesterday and I commented to my boyfriend "Geez, they want a Master's degree for a writing job? Next thing you know they'll be wanting a PhD."

If there's one thing I've learned it's never to speak too soon. Low and behold when I went at it again today I came across a writing ad that said "PhD or equivalent". Are these people for real? If I had a PhD I wouldn't be struggling as a freelancer. That's for damn sure.

It's really odd that the education requirements for most jobs seem to be increasing exponentially. Not even five years ago I could have gotten any writing job I wanted with just a B.A. and a few good clips.

Which brings me to my next point. While I'm all for self-improvement and growth, I think the highest degree I will seek is a Master's. I just don't see a reason to further my debt for something that isn't guaranteed to get me better work.

I've been seriously considering teaching abroad once I get my B.A. It turns out that my friend, Sue was right about going to Korea to teach. The only requirement to teach in Korea is a Bachelors degree. Nothing else. That means when I complete my program at APUS I'm eligible to teach abroad.

There is a heavy need for teachers there, your living expenses are paid by the company, and the average teacher's salary is phenomenal. And since there are no living expenses to pay (like rent) you can spend (or save) a big chunk of your earnings. It sounds like a sweet gig to me. Until then, I will keep trucking along. Only 7 months until Jason gets out.

BTW. Driving him to and from school every day is torture. If we had a car or lived closer to his school, it wouldn't be so bad. I'm so sick of driving all the way out there every day four times a fucking day. *sigh* I wish it would be over now.
